FAQs
What are DBT, ACT, and CBT?
DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) is a therapy that involves evidence-based coping strategies, including skills for emotion regulation, mindfulness, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. DBT theories and techniques help an individual reduce unhelpful behaviors and cultivate more adaptive responses. DBT recognizes that human life inevitably involves pain. We can learn different ways to cope with this pain, so we have less suffering.
ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) is a therapy that uses acceptance and mindfulness techniques, along with commitment and behavior-change strategies, to help individuals live in greater alignment with their values. In ACT, we will often use metaphors (sometimes playful ones!) to help you relate to your thoughts and emotions in new ways. ACT recognizes that when we are deeply connecting to our values, we may also learn to carry pain or discomfort “along for the ride”.
CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) is a therapy that looks closely at the interconnection between thought patterns, behaviors, and emotions. In particular, CBT helps an individual learn about distorted or unhelpful thinking patterns and create new, more helpful ways of thinking.
What does body image work involve?
My approach involves building body image flexibility and acceptance strategies. We will look at the current ways that you are responding to your body image distress, and learn about what isn’t working within these efforts. We will identify the ways in which you are feeling stuck or disconnected from yourself or your values.
Our work will encourage you to feel more present in your body, even when there may be pain or discomfort. I will help you learn strategies to manage this distress differently.
What does eating disorder recovery involve?
I often collaborate with outside registered dietitians and/or physicians in order to provide you with the most beneficial care. I work within the Health at Every Size (HAES) framework.
Our work will help you reduce eating disorder behaviors and urges, recognize how your eating disorder may be incongruent with your values, and promote helpful, functional habits. We will work together to distinguish the “eating disorder voice” from the other parts of you. You will learn a variety of evidence-based coping strategies so that you can manage the distress that often goes along with an eating disorder.
If you are looking for a Health at Every Size (HAES)-aligned registered dietitian or physician, I am happy to provide a referral.
What is your cancellation policy?
I reserve your session time especially for you. If you cancel less than 24 hours before your scheduled appointment time (or “no show”), you will be charged the full rate of your session. Cancellation fees are not covered by insurance.
I understand that emergencies and unexpected situations do occur. I will waive the cancellation fee in these cases, when relevant.
